Adsorption cycles are one means of achieving heat driven heat pumps that will be suitable as domestic gas boiler replacements having only half the gas consumption. Theoretically they offer very high efficiencies but suffer from two difficulties.The first difficulty is poor heat transfer in the adsorbent beds. Good heat transfer is required for reducing both the size and cost and also for improving the energy efficiency. Various researchers (including the investigator) are already working on the heat transfer problem.The second difficulty is that the resultant output is not steady, but fluctuates widely during the typical cycle time of several minutes. Two novel approaches are suggested both of which offer excellent heat transfer and truly continuous and steady output. One of these requires a full computer simulation of the cycle in order to optimise it and assess its potential. The other requires an experimental rig to be built which will test the novel component in the system. Both approaches will be evaluated during the course of this programme.
