Summary on Grant Application Form |
The principal aim of the proposal is the installation of the newly designed IMCO image intensifier system designed to operate with the high-speed camera ULTRANAC FCS501 (which was installed and proved at the Cavendish under Grant GR/H55987). Previous image-converter cameras have provided gains down the image tube of order 2-3. It has thus been possible to study relatively high light-output events at the short exposure times (ca 50-500 ns) required to study chemical reaction in explosives or crack propagation in inert materials. This new image intensifier can be added to the front end of the existing image converter camera and offers an extra gain of 10,000 times over the original tube. This prospect allows study of rapid events that have extremely low light emissions, or very fast events which can be l it only with low levels of light from conventional flash systems (such as high magnification experiments lit by optical fibres). Such an apparatus can be used in the study of such diverse topics as fractoemission, where light is emitted from propagating cracks; sonoluminescence where it comes from collapsing bubbles; leader development in lightning strike to aircraft, and in the earliest stages of ignition in explosives
