Summary on Grant Application Form
The task of the blind source separation is the reconstruction of a set of unknown source signals from the observation of another set of linear mixture of unknown, but statistically independent, sources when the mixture matrix is also not known. This notion of the statistical independence, amongst others, will be exploited in the derivation of new algorithms. the aims of this proposal are to provide efficient extensions to current methods, to develop higher-order statistics and general theoretical principles based new methods for solving the existing as well as a new class of problems, and to evaluate performance of algorithms for real problems with data from the Defence Research Agency. Although strong emphasis will be on sonar, results will have applications in radar, audio, communications and biomedical areas as well. Generally a more robust target detection or source separation capability will be achieved. Funding of this project will promote and support high quality basic and strategic research and related training in engineering. Additionally it will advance knowledge, trained engineers, and meet some of the needs of the beneficiaries.
