Summary on Grant Application Form
It is already known that uniform long n-alkanes exhibit a minimum in their crystallisation rates near to the transition from once folded to extended chain growth. In this project we will examine this phenomon in great detail using a range of chain lengths and looking for growth rate minima at all transitions between differently integrally folded states. We shall pay particular attention to the effects of supersaturation as well as those of supercooling. We expect, from preliminary exploratory work, to make the link between the growth and morphology of linear polyethylene and these ideal model materials.
