The plan is for Dr. Goldberg to join in the work at Newcastle on object-oriented reflection that was initiated through a two-year University-funded research project led by Dr. Stroud entitled Object-Oriented Mechanisms for Satisfying Nonfunctional Requirements . This work now forms a central focus of the new ESPRIT Long Term Research Project on Design for Validation (DeVa) that Newcastle leads. The aim of this work is to facilitate the design of reusable application-independent system components that can address particular non-functional requirements. There are, however, many open questions concerning such issues as: (i) what types of non-functional characteristic can usefully be implemented separately, (ii) to what extent can such implementations be fully transparent to the implementers of the main system functionality, and (iii) is it possible to build reusable components, implementing specific non-functional requirements, that are applicable across a wide range of application domains. Dr. Goldberg will draw on his very extensive experience in the design and analysis of a whole series of highly dependable computing systems (of which the SIFT system is perhaps the best known) and produce a report which attempts to provide initial answers to such questions, and thus guidance to us in our future program of research.
