Summary on Grant Application Form
An important area of research for the all electric aircraft is the fault tolerant capability of the on-board electrical power systems and associated equipment. The electric engine fuel pump is seen as a key subsystem on which to demonstrate equipment fault tolerance. Previous research carried by the investigators addressed the issue of fault tolerance of the fuel pump electric drive. This work did not address the effect of the motor position sensor failure or fault tolerance in the electrical supply to the fuel pump drive. The proposed research will address the requirement for fault tolerance throughout the whole drive system. This will extend the application of fault tolerant power electrical circuits to unity power factor conversion equipment. A possible standard for aircraft electrical power systems is the variable frequency constant voltage (VFCV) network. It is proposed to investigate the use of fault tolerant power circuits developed by the applicants to the VFCV based power conversion equipment. The fault tolerant fuel pump drive must be able to cope with the possibility of a position sensor failure. The research programme will also investigate the appliocation of a novel position estimator to the fault tolerant permanent magnet drive.
