Summary on Grant Application Form
The main objective of this research programme is to develop new synthetic methodologies for the preparation of fully substituted liquid crystalline pyrroles. These monomers will be polymerised in the expectation of obtaining high conductivity ordered polymers. The complete substitution of the pyrrole units will enhance the long term stability of the materials as well as reducing the number of structural defects caused by cross-linked during polymerisation. N-Substituted polypyrroles tend to exhibit lower conductivities than analogues unsubstituted materials and thus the N-protecting group, SEM, can be easily removed. These polymers will also be compared to those in which the second b position is unprotected. The conductivities and liquid crystalline behaviour of the polymers will be studied. The surface structures of the electrochemically polymerised polymers is technologically important and these will be characterised using atomic force microscopy.
