Summary on Grant Application Form |
We have pioneered research on homopolymer / lightly branched copolymer blends, where the physical properties of the two components are very similar. We have developed novel, indirect, methods to study liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) and have shown that in linear / lightly branched polyethylene blends LLPS is found, in the unusual form of a closed loop at low linear polymer content. We are now in a position to expand and exploit this research. Under SERC funding we will pursue three lines of study, all following from current work -* We will further the understanding of the novel LLPS we have identified, both through modelling and through experimentation on well defined systems.* We will develop experimental methods in order to observe LLPS directly in the melt.* We will extend the range of blends studied to include materials with higher branch densities, with branches which are chemically different from the backbone, and at a wide range of chemically different polymers.
