Summary on Grant Application Form
The applicants have a method in view, which appears to have not been tried before, for the lineside determination of the bulk tension/compression forces in installed continuously welded rail (CWR). This is commonly expressed in the concept of a stress free temperature (SFT) . The method appears to have the potential for being independent of the self-equilibriating, complex and positional/time variable residual stress distribution in rail. Nevertheless, a preliminary study will be undertaken to gave a full up to date review of immediate past and current work elsewhere into what has so far proved to be a somewhat intractible problem for the measurment of longtudinal forces in CWR. The proposed method currently in view is based on modal analysis methods for process identificarion of the (force sensitive) transfer operator (impluse testing), or transfer function (self-maintained continuous wave testing), in a locally induced twist-rolling of the instally CWR using commercially available non-contacting laser techniques, There is some potential for the use of neural metwork methods in the recovery of the transfer operator from measurments. Experimental testing is proposed on track installed using track tensioning equipment.
