Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed project is concerned with the development of analysis techniques to predict the propagation of ground-born noise from railways through the ground. This is a topic which has received little attention in comparison with the topic of air-borne noise. In recent years an increasing amount of work has been carried out on the prediction of the propagation of low frequency (less than 50Hz) ground vibration. However, in the case of ground-borne noise it will be necessary to extend these techniques up to 250Hz. Both two and three-dimensional combined boundary element/finite element models will be developed fore predicting the frequency response of track/ground systems, as encountered in both surface and underground railways. In order to achieve the desired accuracy over the extended frequency range, boundary element models based on quadratic and higher order elements will be developed. The tunnel walls are to be modelled using solid type shell elements of similar order. The models will be validated by comparison with existing models and experimental measurements.
