Summary on Grant Application Form |
A major uncertainty in the design of soil nailing is the value of pull-out resistance (bond) of the nails. In dense sand it may be very high due to effects of restrained dilation in the soil, while in high plasticity clay it may be unexpectedly low due to low soil-grout contact stresses and residual conditions in the soil around the nail. In all soil types, bond resistance is likely to be affected by the initial stress state in the soil and its density, the diameter and axial stiffness of the nail, the grout pressure used, the nature of the grout etc. A comprehensive series of large scale laboratory tests of soil nail elements is planned, to investigate the influence of these parameters under controlled laboratory conditions. Instrumentation developed for laboratory use may then be suitable for application in field tests, to enable proper analysis of such tests.
