The purpose of this joint project between Oxford Uni and Starthclyde Uni is to develop an efficient numerical methods for the calculation of tidal induced currents and pollutant transport processes. This will be achieved using adaptive hierarchical quadtree meshing to refine selectively the spatial resolution of a costal flow dispersion model. Particular consideration will be given to the prediction of locally high velocity gradients at the edges of shear layers in eddies and the sharp changes in species concentration that occur at advecting effluent fronts. The project will extend the methodology of the inverse flow model already developed at Strathclyde for non-adaptive rectangular meshes to flow gradients. The flow model will be verified against field data, and the species transport model tested for cases involving advection, diffusion and moving fronts. This project will lead to significant improvement in the numerical modelling of effluent dispersion in coastal waters.
