Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme will exploit the recently demonstrated high radiative efficiency and low Auger recombination rates in InAs/InAsxSbl-x type-II strained layer superlattices to develop a new family of laser diodes for the mid-IR spectral region. These will have improved long-wavelength/operating temperature characteristics. Interest will focus on 300K operation at wavelengths (eg the 4.2 micron CO2 line) of technological interest to the gas sensing industry and fully mounted, packaged and tested devices will be produced for evaluation by existing industrial collaborators. The Auger suppression mechanism will be studied in detail with a unique picosecond IR pump-probe spectrometer and waveguide and cavity parameters will be optimised in a co-ordinated development programme. The bandstructure theories of this promising new laser medium will be refined in the light of spectroscopic data obtained during laser development.
