Summary on Grant Application Form |
New techniques will be developed to extend the quantum well (QW) theory of exchange coupling to magnetic multilayers with transition metals spacers and to determine the dependence of the coupling on the ferromagnet thickness. The same techniques will be used to speed up numerical calculations so that large supercell calculations of the coupling with random interfacial roughness can be undertaken. The methods of the QW theory will be used to develop a quantum theory of CPP GMR for realistic bands starting from the Kubo formula. This is to meet the imminent experimental move towards nano-structures for which band structure and quantum effects in GMR are highly relevant. The supercell calculations proposed for the coupling will be adapted to investigate the effect of interfacial roughness on the CPP GMR. The coupling and transport in structures with reduced transverse dimensions will also be investigated.
