Summary on Grant Application Form |
The overall aim of the project is to investigate a multi-level hierarchical intelligent systems architecture which would aid the autonomy and robustness of functional performance including control, information processing, modelling, fault diagnosis, performance enhancement and high level supervision. Major challenges include the synthesis of a hierarchical structure embodying several intelligent systems paradigms; the integration of several sources of qualitative and quantitative knowledge; and the incorporation of high level aspects of task planning, supervision and adaptation. The industrial case study involves a challenging cryogenic application, which offers strong benefits in terms of unsupervised operation using non-classical control methods. The work is timely because of its promise for greater flexibility of operating temperature ranges, achievable via qualitative, linguistic control approaches.
