Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research undertakes an investigation into the quantum dynamics of single molecular systems. The dynamical system usually comprises a molecule in a vibrational state created by ultra-short (femtosecond timescale) pulses. The issues to be addressed concern the extent to which these systems can be controlled, or guided to specific states, and the influences of the molecular environment on the quantum dynamics. The proposal concerns practical issues of control and verification for femto-chemical technology with ultra-short pulses. The proposal also concerns fundamental issues including the proper description f frictional processes in quantum mechanics, the realisation of single quantum systems, the limits of quantum theory in time dependent dynamics, and the necessity, or usefulness, of alternative formulations of quantum theory in the molecular context.
