Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent investigations have shown an increase in crystalline associated with a large increase in flow stress when PEEK and PEK are tested at very high strain rates, and particularly when the test is conducted at elevated temperatures. Previous work at lower rates has shown only decreases in crystallinity after straining. The strain dependence of this crystallinity will be investigated and the investigation broadened to cover a larger range of semi-crystalline polymers with a range of tgs in order to investigate the generality of the phenomenon as well as its relationship to adiabatic heating during high rate tests and ease of crystallisation. The results will be of relevance to all those involved with the use of polymers in impact situations.
