Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall aim of the project is to develop and apply new experimental methods which can accurately probe the kinetics and mechanisms of reactions which occur at liquid/liquid interfaces. A new methodology - micro-dropping liquid with electrochemical detection (MDLED) - will be introduced and characterised. The technique will over come the limitations inexisting techniques by providing: 1) direct liquid/liquid contact; 2) a periodically renewable interface; 3) a well-defined interfacial area; 4) well-defined (and high) mass transfer; 5) a probe of local interfacial concentrations. MDLED, together with new electrochemical microscopy transient techniques, will be kinetically characterise via MDLED operating in the potentiometric mode. The proposed programme will provide valuable new information on the kinetics and mechanisms of these important reactions, which are of considerable significance in a number of industrial processes, and deliver new quantitative methodologies which could be applied to other classes of liquid/liquid interfacial reactions.
