Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the proposal is the study of drives for domestic appliances based on high frequency, high speed induction motors, to provide the appliance industry with the reliable, wide speed range drive it needs for future appliances. The programme includes the improvement of the motors, the development of inverter circuits working directly from rectified single-phase mains and the development of simple and effective speed and torque control techniques. Finite element modelling will be used to investigate ways of reducing iron losses in the motor at high input frequency whilst maintaining low speed torque. A low cost inverter circuit will be developed, with a nominal rating of 1 kVA and an output frequency of up to 1 kHz. The study of the power switch will include the improvement of existing devices and the design and fabrication of smart switches. Economic and regulatory assessments of the drive will be made, based on its use in washing machines. Designing the inverter and motor as a package is a first step to the integrated motor of the future.
