Summary on Grant Application Form
The concept of outsourcing has expanded. higher contribution activities are being outsourced; a wider range of organisations are doing it; the nature of the relationship with the outsource supplier is changing. This expansion is related to new global competitive strategies, as vertically integrated organisations become, to some extent, virtual onew which are part of global networks.Sub-contracting low-level support operations is not the same as outsourcing key processes, the risks are different as is the impact on the organisation. This project will investigate how organisations can successful outsource core activities which have traditionally been undertaken in-house. By tracing which firms undergo when transferring key parts of the value chain to a market , we aim to identify key success factors for those contemplating such a transition. The research will trace in detail the experience of four organisations. The four fall into cells of a two by two matrix, the axes of which are a) motivation for change - reactive or voluntary - and b) type of market - quasi or real. The research will involve both greater richness of the complexity to be captured.Key Words: Management, Information Technology, Outsourcing, Competitive Strategy, Globalisation.
