Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project goals are (1) to further our understanding of the natural attenuation of a complex mixture of organic pollutants in a UK aquifer (a mixture of tar acids in the Sherwood sandstone aquifer), (2) to develop practical methods to estimate the potential for natural attenuation, and (3) to understand the value of intervening to increase attenuation. Some of the issues will be the actual and potential microbial population, its stability and response, the availability of electron acceptors, both dissolved and solid oxidising capacity in the matrix, the differing conditions (particularly redox) required for degradability of individual compounds, the role of dispersion and diffusion in introducing electron acceptors to the plume fringes. The key experimental procedure will be the use of microcosms to reproduce degradation processes in a controlled environment, observe processes and measure parameter values.
