Summary on Grant Application Form |
At Cranfield we have demonstrated for the first time that centrosymmetric molecules can exhibit strong SHG. The intensity generated from the LB film is the strongest obtained from any monolayer whereas previously it was believed that only the asymmetric donor- (p-bridge)-acceptor dyes could have high second order susceptibilities. The discovery opens up a new area of research and based on our findings we aim to optimise the non-linear optical properties of the centrosymmetric dyes by careful consideration of the molecular structure.
