Summary on Grant Application Form |
The numerical solution of aerodynamics flows of industrial interest is potentially computationally expensive. The proposed research will explore the avenues which are available to minimise the computational effort which will be involved in the simulation of a transient 3 dimensional problem with moving boundary components. An unstructured mesh approach will be followed as this has thea dvantage that it can accomodate complex shape domain and moving boundary components which cause the shape of the computational domain to change continuously. Part of the investigation will be concerned with developing techniques to handle changing geometries due to the appearance or removal of boundary components such as might be encountered in the appearance and disappearance of the flaps in aircraft landing configurations. Techniques which will be investigated to reduce the computational effort will include a multigrid method, a domain decomposition procedure and a line relaxation procedure. In order to set sufficient computing resources the project will need to make use of the parallel computers which are now available and consequently the chosen method will be implemented on a parallel platform. An industrial test cases provided by Bae will be used to test the performance of the scheme.
