Summary on Grant Application Form |
At the present time there is unprecedented and rapidly developing technology in the field of thin film recording media. This arises because of the increasing demands for data storage on rigid disk format and the projection that the rigid disk industry will expand by a factor of three in the next five years. The pace of technological development is such that the scientific understanding of the materials to be used is significantly incomplete and in this project a number of aspects associated with the development of new materials for advanced thin film media will be addressed, these topics include the effect of growth processes on the magnetic properties. Included in this area will be subjects such as texturing effects, the use of seed layers etc., and process parameters. Additionally, novel alloy compositions and artificial structures will be studied. Central to this work will be a study of anisotropy and grain size effects which will be examined via the application of some new measurement techniques, together with the extended use of existing methods. The study of the magnetic properties will be correlated with recording information provided by collaborators.
