Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the proposed project is to thoroughly investigate, implement and test condition monitoring of wind turbine blades using techniques that employ only the electrical power as an input signal. The final instrument will use no sensors mounted on the rotor, nacelle or tower. The analysis methods will be verified on the Windharvester wind turbine located at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory's Wind Test site using existing instrumentation. Detection of aero-elastic instability will also be examined, as will be the possibility of monitoring the state of other components such as the generator, gearbox and bearings using the same electrical power signal. The condition monitoring instrument will be tested on other, larger machines in a commercial setting.
