Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the research is to develop a computer-based quality improvement process for labour-intensive assembly lines. The research will be based on a case-study of a caravan production line where most components are fragile and assembled by hand. The great variety in product design makes the production line unstable rendering it difficult to iron out problems using conventional approaches. The process will provide timely information to the Production and Quality Managers about specific manufcturing defects including hypotheses about the possible causes. The process will not be specific to the particular components or assembly methods used and can thus be adapted to many production lines. The novel scientific issue being addressed is the application of computer learning mechanisms to accumulate data and make inferences. The technological issues centre on developing a method whereby these novel techniques can be applied to a production line in a structured and effective way.
