Summary on Grant Application Form |
Nonlinear equalisation in communications systems has been shown to be beneficial in terms of providing performance which lies between that achievable using linear equalisers and that using maximum likelihood sequence estimation. The potential architectures which may be deployed in this context include radical basis function systems which have the advantage of easy adaptation but suffer from large complexity for long dispersion. Alternative include nested structures such as the multilayer perception (MLP) which are more parsimonious but are difficult to adapt reliably. The main aim of this project is to investigate the use of genetic algorithms in the context of MLP adaptation. This has the additional advantage of removing explicit dependence on the applied cost function.
