To develop discrete modelling methods based on lattics gas automata, lattice Boltzmann and dissipative particle dynamics techniques for the modelling of complex fluids and their processing properties. Such mesoscopic approaches are aimed at bridging the gap between microscopic simulations which are excessively computer-intensive and macroscopic approaches where it is difficult to incorporate the essential flow properties. Building on existing local expertise we plan to complete the validation of the simulation methods by application to simple fluids and boundary conditions. Work will then be extended to the implementation of increasingly realistic processing problems of direct industrial importance such as shear and flow in porous media and the study of foams. By the end of the project we aim to have provided a basis for mesoscopic, discrete, soft-solids software package for use by academia and industry.
