Summary on Grant Application Form |
Phenolic resins are encountered in every day life as foams since the foaming process can enhance a useful property of the material such as insulation. Traditionally, the foam character is introduced through the use of a gas during the polymerisation. Volatile liquids such as fluorocarbons. CFCs were included in the polymerisation mixture which vaporised at the processing temperature. However, concern over emissions of volatile organic compounds and their ozone depleting potential. ODP has meant that replacements have had to be found, typically HCFC or short-chain hydrocarbons. Unfortunately, this has resulted in a loss of product quality. To counter this, the nature of the stabilising surfactant is becoming critical. the interactions between the surfactant, the vapour and the polymer ultimately determine the final
