Summary on Grant Application Form
Five main factors known to affect spalling and that can be practically measured and controlled will be studied factorially at 3 different levels. The factors are strength, curing, humidity conditions, different types of aggregate and boundary restraints. A fractional factorial technique will be adopted to extract as much information as possible from the minimum number of tests. From these results additional concrete samples including additives known to alleviate spalling will be tested. Taking the results from the testing in conjunction with existing thermal structural computer programs, recommendations will be made for existing and future construction. It is envisaged that currrent programs will be modified in the light of our results.
