Summary on Grant Application Form
Compared with the technical aspects of machine condition monitoring techniques and devices, little attention has been paid to the management decision-making aspect of condition monitoring. Given condition monitoring information available to date, the key question is how to use such information to make correct maintenance decisions. This leads to the main objectives of the proposed research, that is, to first establish a model to describe the relationship between condition information obtained and the true condition of the monitored component. This model will then be embedded within a decision model to optimise the subsequent maintenance action in terms of a criterion such as cost, downtime, or safety. With this decision model, an on-line computerised decision support system could be developed to achieve the best maintenance strategy. This is novel research which, we believe, would be of great value to British industry through improving equipment maintenance management.
