Summary on Grant Application Form
Polycarbonsilane (PCS) which can be converted to SiC (with a high yield) will be prepared and characterized. The PCS will be blended with Si3N4 and processed to achieve the maximum possible orientation in the PCS phase. The processed samples will be subject to controlled pyrolysis and sintered to convert the PCS to oriented crystalline SiC fibre and thereby to form, in-situ, SiC-Si3N4 composites. A siloxane-silazane copolymer which can be converted to Si3N4 (with a high yield) will also be prepared, characterized and blended with PCS to study conversion of both phases to ceramic to produce a composite. The processes will be characterized fully by rheological measurements, thermogravimetry, spectroscopy and microscopy. The spectroscopic data generated will be analyzed further to investigate the possibilities of fibre-optic remote sensing.
