Summary on Grant Application Form
Changes in legislation mean that ammonia removal from landfill leachate has become a problem. Presently available technologies taken directly from the treatment of sewage have not proved satisfactory. This research aims to investigate a new type of multi-media aerated submerged bioreactor for this task. The pilot plant programme will also research the potential inhibitory materials specific to leachate, principally salt, alkalinity, metal and refractory organics. Tests will include experiments on the influence of support media, redox, nutrients, mixing, pressure and dissolved oxygen on microbial growth rate and performance. The pilot scale work will be linked to field studies and the generation of a data base on existing landfill sites. These field results will be used to correlate landfill history and activity to components in the leachate which might by inhibitory to nitrogen removal. Laboratory testing, with reproducible feeds, will be used to quantify inhibitory/beneficial components identifies by the field study. Further tests will then be carried out on the pilot plant to identify any scale up factors.
