Summary on Grant Application Form
There is presently immense world-wide interest in the development of blue/green LEDs and lasers for application in displays and high density data storage systems. The UKs molecular beam epitixial growth programmes to develop the (Al, In, Ga) N and (Cd, Zn, Mg) (S, Se) - materials systems are based at the University of Nottingham and Heriot-Watt respectively. Both research groups lack electron microscopy and analysis. It is proposed to perform detailed microstructural characterisation of III-V and II-VI wide-band gap heterostructures grown at Nottingham and Heriot-Watt, with the primary aim of optimising growth procedures for the production of blue LEDs and lasers. The effects of different substrates, substrate orientations and growth temperatures will be studied. Different substrate surface preparation techniques will be assessed. Device contacts will be studied in detail. Novel EELS experiments will be attempted to determine the electronic effects of dislocations and other defects on the emission of blue light.
