Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal is to fund the replacement of recently defunct Russian laser drive electronics with a reliable UK version. This is to enable the completion of a wide ranging programme of study into the non-linear optics, carrier scattering rates and electronic tunability associated with intersubband absorption in specially designed semiconductor Multiple Quantum Well samples. The science is as described in the case of GR/J33814, and at the time of writing the project is working well on schedule. We were just starting the third of the 3 years before being sidelined by the irretrievable breakdown of the flashlamp pumping electronics. These were initially bought in Russia for economy. They have minimal (all Russian) documentation, use inscrutable Russian components and are only fixable by those who built them. Changes in the former Soviet Union have now rendered this remote possibility impossible. Economical UK replacements have been identified and are the only way we can see of delivering the science of GR/J33814.
