Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is part of the LINK-Photonics project ELVIS , which aims to exploit microchip laser technology for underwater imaging systems. This proposal forms the science base contribution to ELVIS, and is to explore the microchip laser physics and technology required to extend our current microchip achievements to the requirements of ELVIS. Specifically these are increasingly the single-frequency green power levels, enhancing the frequency stability of the green microchip laser, frequency modulating the green microchip laser, and Q-switching a micro-laser to produce green pulses. This will be done in conjunction with IE Optomech. Our team will also liase with the industrial partners to develop the specifications and as issues arise during the use and further development of the green microlaser systems in the imaging demonstrator. The proposed enhancements build on an understanding of the physics of the microchip devices and the benefits offered by different gain and non-linear materials. Some of these aspects are being investigated in the current programme, and will be enhanced by the work involved in the LINK project.
