Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this proposal is to combine the characterisation of polymer interfaces at a molecular level with mechanical testing of such interfaces in order to gain an understanding at the molecular level of the adhesion of polymers. We will consider three specific areas; adhesion of polymers to non-polymers, to like polymers (autoadhesion), and unlike, immiscible polymers. The opportunity for this program arises at this time because of recent leaps in our ability to characterise polymer interfaces, using techniques such as neutron reflectivity; this improved capability to probe interfaces at a molecular level now needs to be coupled directly to the properties of those interfaces that are important in the many practical uses of polymers. We will make such a link by carrying out adhesion tests designed on the basis of fracture mechanics to yield quantities truly characteristic of the properties of the interface (rather than reflecting the degree of bulk deformation). These tests will be carried out on model systems which will also have been characterised by neutron reflectivity. An improved understanding of the molecular basis of polymer adhesion will allow adhesion to be tailored in a rational way.
