Summary on Grant Application Form |
Radioactive nuclear beams at ORNL will be used to measure proton orbit sizes in proton-rich nuclei. The first proposed experiment will use a beam of 17F. States of 17F are believed to exhibit a proton halo, a phenomenon which is currently of intense interest. Further experiments using nucleon transfer reactions may be studied at ORNL following the successful completion of the proposed experiment. Inverse kinematic one and two nucleon transfer reaction will be used at the SPIRAL facility to study single particle strength in neutron rich nuclei, to measure nuclear masses and to investigate neutron pairing in weakly bound systems. Experimental apparatus required to perform the proposed experiments will be assembled and tested at the University of Paisley in parallel with similar developments undertaken by colleagues at the University of Manchester.
