Summary on Grant Application Form |
The mechanical properties of oriented semi-crystalline polymers are strongly dependent upon lamallar orientation, in addition to chain orientation. We are therefore requesting 2D low angle X-ray facilities suitable for the characterisation of oriented semi-crystalline polymers. The equipment will be used to characterise a wide range of materials and composites, including novel oriented polyethylene/hydroxyapatite bone substitute materials produced by a range of fabrication procedures and 'single phase' composites produced by hot compaction of oriented fibres. The information gained will be used to optimise the processing and properties of these new, technologically important, materials. The equipment will also be used to characterise the morphology of materials used to validate our theoretical modelling procedures which utilise molecular dynamics and composite modelling techniques to predict the mechanical properties of semi-crystalline polymers. The equipment will be available to all members of the IRC in Polymer Science and Technology and the Polymer Group at Leeds. It will be of general use in the study of phase-separated materials including gels, polymer blends and block copolymers in addition to other semi-crystalline homopolymers.
