Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme divides three sub-tasks. In the first - modelling and design - code will be written to calculate band structure in 2D and 3D crystals, to design D photonic crystal waveguides, and to model the behaviour of a number of microcavity designs and quasi-metallic photonic crystal (PC) clad cylindrical waveguides. IN the second - fabrication - the photoelectrochemical Si etching technique of Lehmann will be further developed to achieve submicron 2D unit cell dimensions, create genuine 3D Pcs and realise a number of novel devices including high Q microcavities, quasi-metallic clad waveguides and optical gas sensors; exploratory work on the etching of Ge and Ge/Si will be carried out and prototype Pcs fabricated in these materials. In the third - optical characterisation and testing of the PC devices; these include FTIR spectroscopy, ellipsometry and a unique combination of prism coupling and scanning near-field optical microscopy. This last will allow direct measurement of the band structure (reciprocal space) and the microscopic intensity distributions in the Pcs (real space). The scanning probe tip will also be used to inject light directly into microresonators and measure their lifetimes.
