Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project aims to develop a new algorithmic approach to road traffic assignment which, by directly estimating differences, will be able to more accurately estimate the impact of (relatively) small traffic schemes or changes in the demand pattern. Traditionally this problem is approached by comparingg the outputs of two independant traffic assignments to with scheme without scheme networks. Very often the effect of the scheme can be effectively masked by the noise .The algorithms will be based on route flows as opposed to link flows qhich in turn offers substantial secondary benefits in terms of enhanced analysis facilities and reduced computational time for a wide range of applications. Prototype versions of route-based algorithms have been developed and tested as part of MSc and PhD research and have confirmed the feasibility of the approach and its potential benefits; for example, they can provide much improved rates of convergence.
