Summary on Grant Application Form
The mass spectrometry facilities in the Department of Chemistry at Liverpool University currently comprise a 14 year old VG70E instrument and a Trio 1000 capable of running low resolution GC-EI spectra. The arrival of Professor Roberts has resulted in an increase of running low GC-EI spectra. The arrival of Prof Roberts has resulted in an increase of approximately 20% in PhD students and PDRAs in the Department. This has led to a crisis in the service which is now unable to cope. Due to the age of the VG70E the data system is archaic. An up grade of this data system as requested would significantly increase the efficiency of the service used by a large research school. Due to the development of new research themes the Department has an immediate need for a MALDI-TOF spectrometer. This will be used in research in Biocatalysis, nanostructured materials, electrocatalysis, polynucleotide analysis, polymer research and high nuclearity clusters.
