Summary on Grant Application Form
The consistent manufacture of high quality steel products requires specification and control of composition and fabrication procedures. British Steel Strip Products have therefore developed a range of specialist alloys and coatings to meet the needs of critical market sectors, eg automotive, packaging, consumer durable, construction. However, to fully exploit the advantages provided by these materials requires a detailed understanding of processing parameters on structure (and hence properties). A key variable which affects the behaviour of steel is thermal history. Thus, temperature will modify fabrication characteristics during production of sheet steel and factors such as joining when steel components are assembled. The present programme will involve the purchase, commissioning and calibration of a high definition thermography facility. Having established the capability for monitoring static and dynamic thermal patterns, the system will be applied to manufacturing processes under laboratory and plant conditions. Specific benefits have been identified to on-going research related to casting and joining. In addition, a major new research area to assess the effect of process variables on the heat development and nugget formation during resistance welding in collaboration with British Steel Strip Products is defined.
