Summary on Grant Application Form |
Major advances have been achieved by the Investigator in understanding the behaviour of driven offshore piles. A spread of theoretical, laboratory and field tests had led to a fundamental understanding of the basic mechanics involved and new simple design methods have been developed that are far more reliable that any existing approaches. These have now have been adopted for practical use. It is proposed to apply a similar approach to improve the currently empirical and relatively unreliable methods used to design onshore bored piles and to investigate some potentially highly significant effects of age, pile shape, concrete type and group interaction. The main feature of the work will be intensive testing at the BRE's Canons Part test site, where the Investigator and BRE have previously performed very successful programmes of research involving other pile types (see attached sheet for list of references).
