Summary on Grant Application Form
There has been an increased interest in the potential driven chloride migration test in the recent past, where a thin concrete disc is tested in a standard diffusion cell with an electrical potential causing the transfer of flux. Experimental investigations at Queen's and elsewhere, both in the UK and abroad, have illustrated that a reliable assessment of the chloride ion penetration resistance can be made with such tests. On the basis of this, it is proposed to develop an in-situ accelerated ionic migration test and standardise the procedure to determine the chloride ion migration coefficient of the near surface concrete. Parallel investigation with diffusion cells and concretes subjected to different chloride exposure regimes will be used to establish the validity of the new apparatus.
