Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project brings together 17 members of staff and 8 companies in a unique proposal to purchase a state-of-the-art atmospheric pressure ionisation mass spectrometer together with fully automated liquid chromatography (LC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) instrumentation. The proposal is designed to:? Enhance the research infrastructure, improving facilities in major analytical instrumentation.? Enable the Department of Chemistry to maintain excellence in key disciplines, particularly separation science, synthetic chemistry, clean technology, and reaction mechanisms.? Share facilities with the eight companies in the consortium, giving them an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a leading-edge technique.? Provide a major impact on various Departmental research priority areas and industrially linked projects in the Technology Foresight areas of Biomaterials, Catalysis, Chemical and Biological Synthesis, and Clean Processing Technology.? Strengthen graduate education and training in key analytical techniques.Combined LC-MS and CE-MS separation and spectrometric studies will be undertaken in four areas:1. Identity confirmation and quantification of analyses in complex mixtures.2. Physical studies of the ESI process.3. Synthesis and synthetic methodology (including clean synthesis).4. Reaction mechanisms and catalytic processes of industrial interest.
