Summary on Grant Application Form |
A materials-centred approach is proposed for improving our understanding of sol-gel processing from the atomic to the mesoscopic level. The comprehensive methodology will use X-ray and neutron scattering, NMR, IR, EXAFS, SAXS and computer modelling to build accurate and detailed structural models. These will provide the basis for a significantly enhanced understanding of the structure-synthesis relations that will be of widespread use and directly transferable to the sol-gel materials community. The effects of precursor materials and synthesis conditions will be investigated and the degree of reproducibility carefully examined; this naturally extends to a detailed comparison of bulk and thin film samples. The project will concentrate on materials within the TiO2-ZrO2-SiO2 system where we already have some experience and there is considerable technological interest. The system also provides ample opportunity for addressing fundamental questions such as those related to the structural chemistry of such systems to be explored which will have an impact on many fields in which glassy materials are important.
