Summary on Grant Application Form |
The facility exists to supply the needs of UK scientists for high quality single crystals of oxide superconductors. The programme to meet these requirements involve complementary activities at the two sites. The growth of YBCO crystals, both doped and undoped, by flux techniques and by top seeded solution growth will be performed at Oxford, mainly fromY203 crucibles to avoid contamination. Other RBCO growth will be centred in Birmingham, from YSZ crucibles but also from R203 crucibles where appropriate and available. Seeded melt textured processing to produce large grained material from which large crystals can be extracted will be studied in Birmingham. Flux growth in a thermal gradient of BSCCO 2212 and 2201 and cation substituted crystals will be undertaken in Birmingham with research on the production of 2223 crystals will take place at Oxford. Investigation of alternative crucible materials and production routes including plasma spraying will occur at both sites. LaSCO-based crystal growth will continue at Oxford, with growth of BKBO/BPBO and LiTi204 being the subject of a separate proposal. Characterisation will be central to the activity, with chemical homogeneity by EPMA, structural data from XRD, control of oxygen stoichiometry being related to Tc measurement.
