Summary on Grant Application Form
The facility exists to supply the needs of UK scientists for high quality single crystals of oxide superconductors. Their current needs range from small single crystals of the highest possible purity and crystal perfection, to crystals 20cc or more in size for high resolution neutron scattering.Oxford programme 1997 - 2000:i) Y123 crystals: Recently developed yttria/baria crucibles eliminate metallic impurities when YBCO crystals, pure and doped, are grown from high purity chemicals. Small crystals will be grown by spontaneous nucleation while large crystals will be pulled from the seeded fluxed metal.ii) Re123 crystals: Crucibles of the appropriate rare earth oxide bound with BaO will be used similarly for the growth of 123 crystals of Nd, Gd, Pr and other rare-earths and their alloys as required by users.iii) Crystals with controlled twin densities will continue to be provided to users.iv) The optimisation of (La, Sr)2CuO4 will continue.v) The n-type superconductor (Nd, Ce)2CuO4 will be developed further in single crystal form.vi) Crystals of the tetragonal 70K superconductor, (Ca, La) BCO, will be optimised.vii) Further attempts will be made to produce Pb doped BSCCO 2223 crystals from platinum crucibles.
