The use of SGML (ISO8879) for structural markup of large electronic document collections is rapidly growing, but tools for effective exploitation of this technology are lagging behind, particularly in the area of the creation and exploitation of rich linguistic annotations. We have begun work on an SGML development toolkit (LT-NSL) which has the potential to support such tools. In this project we propose to augment LT-NSL in two areas: support for rapid prototyping of tools for the creation, browsing and editing of annotations, specialised to and exploiting the semantics of particular corpus types; the use of interdocument (hyper)links to support complex annotation systems, allowing annotations to be separated from the material annotated, and from one another. We will approach the first goal by identifying classes of annotation which naturally are expressed with particular graphical devices (eg arrows for coreference, background colour for extent), the second via support for a corpus processing architecture which implements appropriate semantics (eg inclusion, replacement) for different types of links. We will involve potential users from industry in constructing two exemplary application which illustrate the use of the resulting tools. We will conclude with a workshop aimed at raising awareness and facilitating technology transfer.
